A basic homepage and domain name can be
designed and set-up from as little as AUS$500, or R2500.00. We often are asked
for a price over the phone. Invariably we'll refuse this because until we know what's involved in designing and developing your website, it's
simply impossible to guess what you might want.
WHAT DOES IT COST TO GET WEB SITE ON-LINE?
Firstly you should view a web site is an investment in your company. Would you
remove your Yellow Pages advertising to save on your advertising expenses?
Probably not, because you fully expect your advertising expenditure to bring a net
profit.
View a web site in a similar way. If the net cost to you for a web site is above zero then think again whether you need one or not.
For those who are starting off, here is a simplified list of what you need to take into consideration when budgeting for a web site.
Up front costs
Initial development cost (50% on contracting, balance due on launch)
Set-up of the hosting server and e-mail
Purchase of a domain name (if you don't have one)
Creation of a company logo (if you don’t have one)
Photography (professional site – professional photography)
Purchase of software (e-commerce, forum, content management etc if
required)
Staff investment in overseeing the site development and preparing content
Ongoing costs
Annual site hosting fee
Monthly search engine submissions
Annual domain name renewal
Ongoing site maintenance, upgrading, modification
Staff investment in overseeing the site / adding web content
Indirect costs
Staff training to help them make the most of the web site
Modification of company stationary and advertising
So as you can see, it is not simply a case of signing one cheque and then forgetting about the site.
Unless you are willing to invest ongoing resources into your web site, it will not benefit you anywhere near as much
as it could. Go work out how your web site will benefit your business and then
calculate the investment over say 2-3 years.
For example, say the upfront costs for your new company web site was R7000 and
the ongoing costs over 24 months came to R250 per month then the total investment over 2 years would be
R13 000.
If your profit improved by R35 000 over that time because of increased customers and decreased costs, then what is the real cost of the web site? Absolutely nothing! In fact, overall you would have been worse off
without R22 000 if you had not gone ahead with your site.
That said, we don't make use of unnecessary technology or scatter brain designs. Many designers will try to convince you to use
the latest web "gimmicks", and
other
"flashy" and often costly add-ons. These are often no more than
an irritation to visitors of web sites. Our policy - Keep it
uncomplicated, easy to navigate and to the point.
Ever been to one of those sites which request you to "Please
wait" the intro is loading...loading...? Or another typical example:
You are required to download some plug-in to see the website. Don't you just
hate that?
Who in their right mind is going to spend money and time on a 33.6kbps connection to download
some plug-in just to view a web site? Time is money so the faster you get
the info you need the better. These slow loading web sites are the sites you most probably will
never go back to, ever again.
Bandwidth limitations are a reality of the Internet worldwide, and even
more so if you are out in the countryside. This will be a reality for many years to come, if not indefinitely. Few people can afford high
speed ISDN or ASDL internet connections...makes you think again doesn't it?
Even in
high tech societies the norm is a 33k or 56k dial-up modem, probably
connecting at between 40-48kbps. Our experience has shown that small to medium
size companies and most adult home users generally buy what they need, so
as not to break their budget. They're not buying the fastest or most flashy equipment affordable
to large web design firms or advertising agencies.
If you are targeting
kids that play online games all the time, well then you may have a point.
But are you? Gaming websites are often graphically intense, because they
are aiming at a specific target group, and they want to sell the latest and
greatest memory intensive hardware and software.
Then there are some designers (good and bad) who test websites on a LAN
(Internal Network) but his/her client never asked for a intranet website!
It looks great on the LAN, but take it out there into cyberspace...THUD!...it
folds. Ask yourself this question, what should be the main focus of
your project. The designer's artistic ego or your company's
sales/marketing/PR objectives.
The typical cost of a small business
HTML based website is in the region of AUS$2000 or R10 000. This would include design,
construction, uploading and initial marketing of the site to a
selection of International, South African and/or Australian specific Search
Engines and Directories.
Payment can be made by direct deposit or electronic bank transfer. 50% of
the Design cost is payable on acceptance of a quote and the balance will be
due on date of publishing the web site.

special effects or specific artwork not supplied, but
